Adrienne Barnes has worked with the Baltimore City Department of Transportation as the Chief of Communications from October 2001 until July 2018. Adrienne developed and organized the public information office for the Department of Transportation after it branched out to become a separate agency. Ms. Barnes was responsible for the creation of the slogan and logo which is affixed on all transportation equipment and official documents, as well as for establishing the website. She produced information and material for five divisions under the Department and handles all public information inquiries as well as coordination of services to the community. The Department is responsible for all Transportation infrastructures within 91 square miles of the city limits and employs over 1500 employees consisting of engineers, technicians, enforcement officers, and clerical. The Department operates from an executive operating budget of 130 million and a capital program of 83 million.
Adrienne has been a member of the Conference of Minority Transportation Officials (COMTO) since 2005. She became 2nd Vice President in 2006 and then moved on to first Vice President. She is currently is in her 2nd term as President of COMTO-Maryland. Under her leadership, the chapter has developed the Annual COMTO Leadership and Economic Development luncheon which has celebrated great success in its last two years.
Adrienne currently holds a bachelor’s degree in Communications from the University of Maryland, College Park, and a Master’s Degree in Legal and Ethical Studies that she received in December 2006 from the University of Baltimore. She is active as a mentor and regularly speaks at various local schools to young people about career opportunities. Adrienne has been featured in American DBE Magazine and the Growth by Design Newsletter sponsored by the Baltimore City Department of Public Works. She has been featured as the keynote speaker at the annual Women Small Business Entrepreneurship Conference and has officiated a Mayoral Debate.
Adrienne now serves on the Board of the Conference of Minority Transportation Officials (COMTO) Maryland Chapter and is a member of several committees in the Women in Transportation (WTS) organization and the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC).
